Chinese President Xi Jinping’s Europe Trip: Strengthening Ties with France, Serbia, and Hungary to Enhance EU Relations

Beijing: Chinese President Xi Jinping is set to embark on a significant Europe tour from May 5-10, marking his first visit to the continent in five years. The trip aims to bolster ties with key European nations amidst escalating tensions with the world’s second-largest economy.

Highlighting the importance of the visit, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Lin Jian emphasized the robust growth of bilateral relations between China and France. Both nations have maintained strategic communications and engaged in practical cooperation, laying the groundwork for further collaboration. Lin underscored the need to elevate the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and France to new heights, thereby injecting fresh momentum into China-EU relations and contributing to global peace, stability, and development.

Amidst tit-for-tat trade disputes with the EU, France’s support for a European Commission anti-subsidy probe into Chinese electric vehicle imports has strained relations. In response, China initiated an anti-dumping investigation targeting French brandy. Despite these challenges, both sides seek to strengthen political mutual trust, solidarity, and cooperation during President Xi’s visit.

President Xi’s itinerary includes talks with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, focusing on bilateral relations and the enhancement of the China-Serbia partnership. Additionally, Xi will visit Hungary, a crucial ally in promoting the Belt and Road initiative and fostering cooperation between China and Central and Eastern European countries.

As China endeavors to deepen its engagement with Europe, President Xi’s visit underscores the significance of cultivating strong ties with key EU nations and advancing mutual interests on the global stage.
