Kyiv: Despite acknowledging the deteriorating situation on the front lines, Ukraine declared on Monday that it successfully thwarted 55 Russian strikes in the eastern Donetsk region, underscoring its relentless defense efforts.
The announcement comes as Moscow’s aggressive expansion persists, with the recent annexation of Novobakhmutivka adding to the mounting tensions. Ukrainian forces, awaiting crucial US armaments, remain steadfast amidst escalating hostilities.
The Ukrainian army reported repelling 55 attacks across various settlements north and west of Novobakhmutivka, including the fiercely contested area of Ocheretyne, which witnessed intense clashes on Sunday.
These settlements, situated north of Adviivka, which fell to Russian forces in February, have seen further encroachments by Moscow’s troops into the Donetsk region.
In the southern front, Ukraine asserted its continued resistance in several settlements west of the Moscow-controlled city of Donetsk, notably in Krasnogorivka. Despite 15 attempted breakthroughs by Russian forces supported by aviation, Ukrainian troops have maintained defensive positions.
Krasnogorivka, a vital stronghold for Kyiv located 20 kilometers (32 miles) west of Donetsk, has faced heightened vulnerability following the fall of nearby Marinka and Avdiivka, leading to intensified clashes in recent weeks.
Ukraine’s commander-in-chief, Oleksandr Syrsky, disclosed on Sunday that Ukrainian forces had strategically retreated to new defensive lines in select areas to reinforce their positions.
Amidst the ongoing conflict, Kyiv has cautioned of Russia’s intentions to secure victories ahead of its patriotic May 9 holiday, highlighting the gravity of the situation and the urgency for international support.
