IAEA Concern Over Potential Israeli Strike on Iranian Nuclear Facilities

Despite Iran temporarily closing its nuclear sites citing security concerns, inspections by the IAEA are set to resume on Tuesday, according to Grossi.

Rafael Grossi, the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), has voiced apprehension regarding the possibility of Israeli reprisals targeting Iran’s nuclear installations. Amid escalating tensions, Grossi emphasized the need for restraint while revealing that IAEA inspections of Iranian facilities are set to resume on Tuesday.

On Sunday, Iran temporarily shuttered its nuclear sites citing “security considerations,” a move that raised alarms internationally. Although operations resumed on Monday, Grossi opted to keep IAEA inspectors at bay “until we see that the situation is completely calm.”

Speaking to reporters in New York, Grossi stated, “We are going to resume tomorrow. This has not had an impact on our inspection activity.”

When pressed about the looming threat of an Israeli strike on Iranian nuclear facilities, Grossi acknowledged ongoing concerns. He urged for “extreme restraint” in the midst of heightened tensions.

Meanwhile, Israeli Defense Forces Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi issued a stern warning following Iran’s missile and drone attack on an Israeli airbase. During a visit to the Nevatim Airbase, which sustained minor damage during the assault, Lt. Gen. Halevi emphasized Israel’s preparedness to respond to any aggression.

“Iran’s attempt to undermine Israel’s strategic capabilities is unprecedented,” Lt. Gen. Halevi remarked. “We are always prepared to defend ourselves, but in the face of such threats, international cooperation is invaluable.”

Looking ahead, Lt. Gen. Halevi affirmed that Israel is evaluating its options. He reiterated Israel’s resolve to retaliate against any further provocations, emphasizing the nation’s commitment to safeguarding its sovereignty and security. The recent exchange underscores the delicate balance of power in the Middle East, with regional tensions continuing to simmer amidst geopolitical complexities.
