French Embassy Urges Citizens to Temporarily Depart Tehran Amid Rising Tensions

Tehran: The French embassy in Iran has issued a recommendation for its citizens to temporarily leave the country amidst escalating tensions in the region following Tehran’s unprecedented attack on Israel.

In a statement posted on its website on Sunday, the embassy advised French residents in Iran, who are able to do so, to temporarily depart the country. Additionally, they are urged to exercise extreme caution during travel and to avoid any gatherings.

Iran launched explosive drones and missiles on Saturday night in its Israel Thwarts Iranian Attack: Over 99% of Drones and Missiles Interceptedfirst direct assault on Israeli soil. Although the attack involved hundreds of missiles and drones, the vast majority, approximately 99%, were intercepted, according to an Israeli military spokesperson.

The attack was purportedly in retaliation for a suspected Israeli strike on Iran’s consulate in Syria on April 1, which resulted in the deaths of top Revolutionary Guards commanders. This incident followed months of clashes between Israel and Iran’s regional allies, stemming from the conflict in Gaza.

Despite the magnitude of the attack, which involved missiles and drones primarily launched from inside Iran, the damage inflicted on Israel was relatively minor, as most projectiles were successfully intercepted with assistance from the US, Britain, and Jordan.

Earlier, during a press briefing on Friday, the embassy advised its nationals to avoid traveling to Iran, Lebanon, Israel, and the Palestinian territories. Additionally, they called for the return of the families of diplomatic agents from Tehran and imposed a ban on missions of French civil servants in these countries.

The attack has garnered international condemnation, with leaders from the UK, US, and even French President Emmanuel Macron speaking out against it. Macron condemned the assault, emphasizing France’s solidarity with Israel and commitment to regional stability.

On X, Macron stated, “I condemn in the strongest terms the unprecedented attack launched by Iran against Israel, which threatens to destabilize the region. I express my solidarity with the Israeli people and France’s commitment to the security of Israel, our partners, and regional stability. France is working on de-escalation with its partners and calls for restraint.”
