Who Was Sarabjit Singh?

Sarabjit Singh, hailing from Punjab, was convicted and sentenced to death on espionage charges, accused of involvement in bomb blasts in Punjab province in 1990, a claim vehemently disputed by his family and Indian authorities. According to his family, Sarabjit Singh inadvertently crossed into Pakistani territory while tending to his farm.

After enduring 23 years of imprisonment in a Pakistani jail, Sarabjit Singh tragically passed away in May 2013 following a cardiac arrest at a hospital in Lahore.

Throughout his protracted incarceration, Sarabjit Singh’s elder sister Dalbir Singh, who regarded him more as a son than a sibling, relentlessly campaigned for his release. Despite her efforts, Sarabjit Singh’s death spurred Dalbir to share his story with the world, culminating in a Bollywood film featuring actors Randeep Hooda and Aishwarya Rai.

The circumstances surrounding Sarabjit Singh’s tragic demise and the subsequent events remain a poignant chapter in the annals of Indo-Pak relations, symbolizing the human cost of longstanding tensions between the two nations.
