Seoul: In a landmark meeting signaling a significant shift in diplomatic ties, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and China’s top legislator, Zhao Leji, have ushered in what both parties describe as a “new chapter” in Beijing-Pyongyang relations. This meeting, among the highest-level encounters between the allies in recent years, underscores the enduring bond between the two nations.
As part of the celebrations marking 75 years of diplomatic relations between China and North Korea, Zhao Leji, a member of the powerful Standing Committee of the Chinese Communist Party’s Politburo, embarked on a goodwill visit to the nuclear-armed North. China, being North Korea’s foremost economic benefactor and staunch diplomatic ally, has consistently stood by Pyongyang’s side, thwarting efforts led by the US and its allies to impose stricter sanctions on Kim Jong Un’s regime in response to its provocative weapons tests.

Speculation is rife that Zhao’s visit may pave the way for Kim Jong Un’s potential state visit to Beijing, further solidifying the burgeoning relationship between the two nations. The departure of the Chinese delegation from Pyongyang, accompanied by senior North Korean officials, marks the conclusion of this historic encounter.
However, amidst the warm relations with Beijing, North Korea’s stance towards South Korea remains frosty. Kim Jong Un has escalated tensions by labeling Seoul as the country’s “principal enemy” and adopting a confrontational posture. Despite this, China remains committed to intensifying legislative exchanges and cooperation, underscoring its pivotal role in maintaining stability on the Korean peninsula.
