Beijing: China has urged India to respect its sovereignty claims over the contested South China Sea following India’s support for the Philippines’ sovereignty. This comes amidst heightened tensions between China and India over Arunachal Pradesh, known as Zangnan by China.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian emphasized that maritime disputes should be resolved between the concerned parties without interference from third parties. Lin urged relevant parties to acknowledge the facts regarding the South China Sea and respect China’s sovereignty and maritime interests.

Lin’s remarks were prompted by Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar’s endorsement of Philippines’ sovereignty during his official visit to Manila. Jaishankar underscored India’s commitment to a rules-based order and reiterated support for the Philippines’ national sovereignty, emphasizing adherence to UNCLOS 1982.
Tensions in the South China Sea have escalated, with multiple countries, including the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei, and Taiwan, making claims to the region. The focus of contention currently lies on the Second Thomas Shoal, where both China and the Philippines assert their claims.

Over the weekend, China lodged a complaint against the Philippines, alleging the dispatch of vessels to transfer construction materials to a grounded warship. In response, the Philippines accused Chinese coastguards of obstructing their ship and using water cannons.

Simultaneously, China protested Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Arunachal Pradesh to inaugurate the Sela Tunnel, reaffirming its claim over the region. India rejected these claims, asserting Arunachal Pradesh’s integral part of India. Jaishankar dismissed China’s assertions as “ludicrous”.
Amidst these diplomatic exchanges, tensions persist between China and India over territorial disputes, underscoring the complex geopolitical dynamics in the region.
