Tel Aviv: Amid the ongoing conflict between Israel and the Palestinian terror group Hamas, a senior Israeli official has accused the United States of attempting to “overthrow” the government led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The accusation surfaced following a US intelligence report suggesting that Netanyahu’s administration could face challenges due to its handling of the Gaza conflict, which commenced on October 7 last year after Hamas launched a sudden attack on southern Israel.
“Those who elect the Prime Minister of Israel are the citizens of Israel and no one else,” stated the unnamed official, as reported by The Times of Israel.

Asserting Israel’s sovereignty, the official emphasized that Israel is not beholden to the US and emphasized its status as a democratic nation. “We expect our friends to act to overthrow the terror regime of Hamas and not the elected government in Israel,” the official added.
The US report on Israel highlighted growing distrust in Netanyahu’s leadership and anticipated large-scale protests demanding his resignation and calling for new elections. It also suggested the possibility of a different, more moderate government.
According to the report, challenges from Hamas are expected to persist in the coming years, raising doubts about Netanyahu’s leadership and the stability of his governing coalition, which comprises far-right and ultra-orthodox parties with hardline policies on Palestinian and security issues.

Meanwhile, Netanyahu remained resolute in Israel’s military operations in Gaza, insisting on the destruction of remaining Hamas forces in Rafah to secure victory in the conflict. He warned of the potential for a Hamas counterattack if decisive action wasn’t taken.
“That is an intolerable threat to our future, and we will not accept it. We will destroy Hamas, free our hostages and ensure that Gaza doesn’t pose a threat to Israel again,” Netanyahu affirmed.
He further pledged to conclude operations in Rafah while ensuring the safety of civilians in the area.

Earlier statements from US President Joe Biden, initially suggesting a “red line” regarding an Israeli offensive in Rafah, were followed by reassurances of unwavering support for Israel.
Since the conflict erupted five months ago, the Gaza Strip has witnessed significant casualties, with 31,184 deaths and 72,899 injuries reported by the Hamas-run Palestinian health ministry.
