Washington: Recent intelligence reports from U.S. agencies shed light on Russia and China’s strategic use of artificial intelligence (AI) to sow discord within American society and tarnish the country’s global reputation.
According to the annual worldwide threat assessment, China is portrayed as actively expanding its covert influence network globally, aligned with the goals of the Chinese Communist Party. Beijing’s tactics aim to foster skepticism towards U.S. leadership, destabilize democratic processes, and extend its influence on a global scale.
The report also underscores Russia’s utilization of new technologies, such as generative AI, to enhance its ability to reach Western audiences. Presented to the Senate Intelligence Committee, the assessment indicates that Moscow is considering how the outcome of the 2024 U.S. elections could impact Western support for Ukraine, with intentions to influence the elections in ways conducive to its interests.

In their 2024 Annual Threat Assessment, intelligence agencies highlight an evolving landscape where an assertive China, a confrontational Russia, regional powers like Iran, and increasingly capable non-state actors challenge established norms of the international system and U.S. dominance within it.
The report notably concentrates on the threats posed by China and Russia, the primary rivals to the United States, reflecting on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine over two years ago. Additionally, it acknowledges the risks of broader conflicts, including those stemming from Israel’s actions against Hamas in Gaza since the Oct. 7 attacks.
