Berlin: Recent data from Die Zeit reveals a significant surge in opposition among Germans regarding the provision of Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine.
According to the survey, only 28% of respondents support the idea of supplying the Bundeswehr’s 500-kilometer range missiles to Kyiv.
Meanwhile, a staggering 58% oppose the proposal, with 31% adamantly against any German weapon support for Ukraine and 14% undecided.
Conducted from March 1 to 5, the survey sampled 2,169 German citizens, coinciding with Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s firm stance against missile supply voiced in the preceding week.
Scholz voiced concerns over potential entanglement in the conflict, particularly regarding the risk of German involvement if missiles reached Russian territory or if German troops were needed for target programming in Ukraine.
Notably, opposition to the Taurus missile supply has been on the rise, as indicated by YouGov polls. Comparing data from early February (2nd to 6th), opposition surged from 49% to 58%, while support dwindled from 31% to 28%.
This growing resistance unfolds amidst Russian efforts to impede weapon provisions, underscored by the disclosure of intercepted discussions among top German Air Force officials regarding the Taurus missiles.
