Jharkhand Train Accident: 3-member team to probe Jamtara Incident, 2 crush to Death

Eastern Railways refutes claims of fire onboard, stating victims were not passengers but pedestrians on tracks.

A distressing incident unfolded near Kalajharia Halt in Jharkhand’s Jamtara district as two individuals lost their lives after being struck by a train along the Asansol-Madhupur railway track route. The unfortunate event occurred yesterday evening under the jurisdiction of the Asansol Railway division. Eastern Railways has promptly assembled a three-member team to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The incident occurred when passengers aboard the Anga Express, en route from Bhagalpur to Bengaluru, purportedly disembarked due to rumors of a fire onboard, triggering a frantic attempt to flee the situation. Tragically, as passengers attempted to cross the tracks in a bid to escape the perceived danger, they were struck by another train traversing the route.

However, Eastern Railway authorities have refuted claims of a fire onboard and clarified that the victims were not passengers but individuals walking along the tracks when the accident transpired.

Mr. Kaushik Mitra, an official from Eastern Railways, stated, “Two persons walking on the track were run over by the train at least two km away from train number 12254 passing from Vidyasagar Kasitar. There is no incident of fire. As of now, two deaths have been confirmed. The deceased are not passengers, they were walking on the track. A three-member committee has been formed to enquire about the issue.”

Rescue operations are underway, with medical teams, four ambulances, and three buses dispatched to the scene to facilitate the transportation of the injured to Jamtara. The accident site is located approximately 15 km from the district headquarters.

Leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Champai Soren have expressed their condolences to the families of the victims and assured support for relief and rescue efforts.
