Jaishankar Stresses India’s Unique Relationship with Russia Amidst Western Criticism

India's EAM emphasizes, "Russia has never hurt our interests."

Munich: In an interview with German daily Handelsblatt, Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar defended India’s longstanding ties with Russia amidst Western pressure to distance itself from Moscow amid the conflict in Ukraine.

“Russia has never hurt our interests,” Jaishankar emphasized, highlighting the historical stability and friendship characterizing Indo-Russian relations. He underscored that India’s current partnership with Moscow is built upon this solid foundation.

India’s decision to maintain its relationship with Russia has drawn scrutiny, particularly in the wake of Vladimir Putin’s actions in Ukraine, which prompted Western sanctions and increased support for Kyiv. Despite this, Jaishankar defended India’s stance, asserting that purchasing Russian oil and gas remains essential, especially in stabilizing global energy markets.

Highlighting the practicality of India’s energy choices, Jaishankar pointed out that Indian purchases of Russian crude oil have contributed to stabilizing world market prices. He argued that diversifying energy sources is crucial for global energy security and warned against potential price volatility if alternative energy suppliers are not sought.

Responding to questions about India’s diplomatic balancing act between the US and Russia, Jaishankar asserted the importance of maintaining multiple diplomatic options. He emphasized India’s strategic agility and dismissed concerns about potential conflicts of interest between its alliances.

During a panel discussion at the Munich Security Conference, Jaishankar reiterated India’s diplomatic pragmatism, asserting that having multiple diplomatic options is a sign of strategic acumen rather than a problem.
