Greece and India Forge ‘Win-Win’ Partnership with IMEEC: Greek Deputy Foreign Minister

New Delhi: Konstantinos Fragkogiannis, Greek Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, Economic Diplomacy, and Openness, hailed the India-Middle East-Europe-Economic Corridor (IMEEC) as a “win-win venture” and a promising opportunity for both Greece and India.

Addressing an event ahead of the visit by Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Fragkogiannis emphasized Greece’s readiness to participate in IMEEC, highlighting the strategic advantage of its numerous ports, which can serve as vital hubs within the corridor. He also underscored the potential synergy between IMEEC and Greece’s upcoming railway network, envisaging comprehensive connectivity along north-south and east-west corridors.

IMEEC, a concept proposed by India during the G-20 summit, holds immense potential to reshape global trade and communication networks, according to Fragkogiannis. With Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Greece, the country is poised to emerge as a significant player within IMEEC.

Fragkogiannis stressed that closer collaboration between India and Greece would bolster maritime cooperation, fostering food security and sustainable ‘blue’ economic development. Greece’s extensive coastline and strides in green energy utilization exemplify its commitment to sustainability. Initial efforts in implementing green energy projects on select Greek islands will pave the way for similar initiatives across the country.

Moreover, Fragkogiannis outlined Greece’s proactive measures to combat climate change, affirming the country’s goal to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, with substantial progress expected by 2030.
