IT Glitch Disrupts Operations at London Stansted Airport, Delays Flights and Strands Passengers

Stansted ranks as London’s third-busiest airport by passenger volume and serves as a key hub for both domestic and international travel.

London: London’s Stansted Airport faced significant disruption on Sunday after technical issues affected key operational systems, leaving hundreds of travelers waiting in long queues both inside and outside the terminal. The IT failure impacted check-in, baggage handling, and security processes, leading to widespread delays across scheduled flights.

While the airport confirmed later in the day that the issue had been resolved, it acknowledged that flight schedules remained affected due to the backlog created during the outage.

“Passengers are advised to check with their airlines for the latest updates as services gradually return to normal,” the airport said in a statement.

Images circulated widely on social media showed frustrated travelers standing in extended lines, with some queues snaking outside the terminal building. Anne Alexander, a reporter for ITV, posted on X that she and other passengers missed their flights due to the disruption.

Stansted ranks as London’s third-busiest airport by passenger volume and serves as a key hub for both domestic and international travel. The incident adds to a string of recent disruptions at major UK airports.

In March, London Heathrow—the busiest airport in Europe—was shut down for nearly a full day after a fire at an electricity substation crippled operations. Just two days prior to the Stansted incident, Manchester Airport in northwest England also experienced delays due to a power supply issue affecting immigration control.

The series of events has raised concerns over the resilience of the UK’s airport infrastructure, particularly at a time of increased summer travel demand.
