New York – The future of coding may soon be in the hands of artificial intelligence, as top tech leaders signal a seismic shift in how software is written. In recent statements, the CEOs of Google, Microsoft, Meta, and other major firms confirmed that AI is increasingly taking over coding tasks — and faster than many had anticipated.
During a recent earnings call, Google CEO Sundar Pichai revealed that AI is now responsible for writing “well over 30%” of new code at the company — a notable increase from the 25% figure he cited just six months ago in October 2024.
“In the last six months, the percentage of code that is written by AI has already grown by 5%”, Pichai said, highlighting the pace at which AI is advancing in code generation.
Microsoft and Meta Echo the Trend
Meanwhile, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, in a public conversation with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, confirmed that 30% of Microsoft’s code is now generated by AI. He even noted that some of the company’s projects are “probably all written by software” at this point.
Zuckerberg, however, made the boldest prediction yet. He claimed that AI will write nearly 100% of the code for Meta’s flagship Llama AI project within the next 12 to 18 months.
“I think sometime in the next 12 to 18 months, we will reach the point where most of these codes that are going towards these efforts [Meta Llama projects] will be written by AI” ,Zuckerberg stated.
He added that AI has already surpassed the performance of average coders and is quickly catching up to top-tier engineers.
“Today, you have good autocomplete… But soon, if you give it a goal, it can run tests, it can find issues, it will write higher quality code than an average very good person on the team already”.
AI in Full Control: The Next Evolution
While AI has long been used for support functions such as autocomplete and bug detection, industry leaders are now suggesting that AI will soon handle full-cycle development autonomously — from writing code from scratch to testing and debugging.
This vision is backed by Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, who predicted in March 2025 that AI will be generating 90% of code within 3–6 months, and potentially all of it by year-end.
OpenAI and Corporate Adoption
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman also confirmed that in several companies, AI is already writing 50% of the code. The momentum has also led companies to begin restructuring their hiring and operational models.
Duolingo CEO Luis von Ahn recently announced the company will begin replacing human contractor jobs with AI, citing that AI can already perform many of these tasks efficiently.
“We’ll gradually stop using (human) contractors to do work that AI can handle”, he stated.
Shopify has also made AI central to its operations. CEO Tobias Lütke recently told employees that AI-first thinking is now a requirement, even before new hires are considered.
“Before asking for more headcount and resources, teams must demonstrate why they cannot get what they want done using AI” ,Lütke said.
“Reflexive AI usage is now a baseline expectation at Shopify”, he added.
What This Means for the Future
The statements from these industry leaders reflect a fundamental transformation in the nature of software development. AI is no longer just a tool for developers — it is becoming the developer. As coding increasingly becomes automated, the tech workforce may need to rapidly adapt, reskill, and redefine its role in a future where AI writes the bulk of our software.
