From Strength to Slump: Trump’s Support Weakens on Economy and Immigration

New Poll Shows Decline in Trump’s Approval Amid Economic and Immigration Controversies

Washington, D.C. – President Donald Trump is facing a significant drop in public approval, according to new polling data from AtlasIntel, widely recognized as the most accurate polling firm of the 2024 U.S. election. The latest results signal trouble for Trump as concerns mount over his economic and immigration policies.

The April survey, conducted between April 10–14 among 2,347 U.S. adults, reveals that 52% of respondents disapprove of Trump’s performance, while 46% approve—giving him a net approval rating of -6 points. The poll has a margin of error of ±2 percentage points.

The slide marks a steady decline over recent months. In March, Trump’s net approval rating stood at -5 points (52% disapprove, 47% approve), while in February, he briefly enjoyed a slight positive margin of +0.6 points.

“The president’s personal image has worsened significantly, shifting from a tie to a -8pp net rating. Amid controversies over new tariffs announced by the administration, the economy has become the main concern of the American public. At the same time, confidence in the president on this issue has deteriorated”, AtlasIntel posted on X (formerly Twitter).

The survey paints a clear picture of declining support across Trump’s key policy areas—especially the economy and immigration, which were once considered his strengths.

📉 Trump’s Economic Policies Facing Public Rejection

A major contributor to the dip in approval is Trump’s proposed global tariff hikes, which many economists have warned could trigger higher inflation and possibly a recession. According to the poll, 51% of Americans oppose the tariffs outright, while only 23% support them. Additionally, 64% believe the new trade policy will drive prices up further.

Trump’s economic approval rating has shifted sharply as a result. In March, 48% of Americans rated his economic handling as “terrible/poor” or “excellent/very good.” By April, those rating it as “terrible/poor” jumped to 56%, with only 42% describing his performance as “excellent/good.”

🧭 Immigration No Longer a Stronghold

Trump’s immigration stance has also taken a hit. In April, 52% of Americans rated his immigration performance as “terrible/very poor,” compared to 46% who still viewed it positively—a net approval of -6 in the category. This marks a notable reversal from March, when 51% approved of his immigration policies and 43% disapproved.

Recent controversies over aggressive deportation practices, including the forced removal of migrants to a notorious prison in El Salvador, have added fuel to the backlash. One high-profile case involves Kilmar Abrego Garcia, deported from Maryland under what the Department of Justice labeled an “administrative error.” While the White House claims Garcia is affiliated with the MS-13 gang, his family and legal team deny any evidence of such a link.

🗣️ Expert Reactions

“An important thing to note here is that immigration remains Trump’s best performing area even if it’s now slightly underwater. Atlas always treats response bias. A better hypothesis is contagion from pessimism on the economy and tariffs. This may be temporary or it may endure”, said Andrei Roman, CEO of AtlasIntel, on X.

He also noted that stories like Abrego Garcia’s deportation and the removal of international students involved in anti-Israel activism could be impacting public sentiment, but maintained that economic pessimism is the primary driver of Trump’s declining approval.

The findings present a worrying picture for Trump’s supporters and campaign strategists as the 2024 presidential race intensifies. Once hailed for his hardline stance on immigration and perceived economic stewardship, Trump now finds himself navigating diminishing trust among the American public—particularly on the very issues that helped fuel his rise.
