Moscow/Washington, DC: U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed support for Russian President Vladimir Putin’s proposal to hold ice hockey matches between professional players from the United States and Russia, according to the Kremlin. The two leaders discussed the idea during a call on Tuesday.
Russia remains barred from international ice hockey competitions following its 2022 invasion of Ukraine, a move that led to widespread sanctions and suspensions from major sporting bodies. Despite this, Putin, a known hockey enthusiast, has continued to advocate for Russia’s inclusion in the sport.
NHL and White House Response
The White House’s statement following the call between Trump and Putin made no mention of ice hockey, and officials have not responded to questions regarding the matter.
The NHL, which has distanced itself from Russian partnerships since the invasion of Ukraine, acknowledged the conversation between the two leaders but refrained from taking a stance.
“We have just become aware of the conversation between President Trump and President Putin,” an NHL spokesperson told Reuters. “Obviously, we were not a party to those discussions, and it would be inappropriate for us to comment at this time.”

Russia’s Ongoing Hockey Ban
Following Moscow’s military action in Ukraine, the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) suspended all Russian and Belarusian teams from its tournaments. In addition, the NHL severed ties with Russian business partners, halted Russian-language media content, and ruled out hosting future competitions in the country.

In response to international pressure, the IIHF relocated the 2023 World Championship from St. Petersburg, dealing another blow to Russia’s hockey aspirations. However, Russian players continue to compete in professional leagues in the U.S. and Canada.
The IIHF is expected to decide by May whether Russia and Belarus will be allowed to participate in the 2025-26 season, which includes the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo.
