Elon Musk Dubbed ‘Colonel Muskov’ in Russia Amid Claims of Starlink Use in Ukrainian Invasion

Moscow: Russian supporters of the war have bestowed the moniker ‘Colonel Elon Muskov’ upon Elon Musk, amidst allegations that his Starlink satellite system aids Vladimir Putin’s forces in the occupied regions of Ukraine, according to media reports.

According to Kyiv, Russian troops have been utilizing the SpaceX communications device in their invasion of Ukraine, a matter that military intelligence spokesperson Andriy Yusov describes as ‘systemic’.

Yusov stated: ‘Cases of use of these devices by Russian occupiers have been recorded. This is beginning to become systemic.’

While Starlink has been pivotal in Ukraine’s resistance against Russia, it is intended to be ‘geofenced’ to prevent operation in unauthorized territories, including Russia. However, the Ukrainian GUR military intelligence agency reports that Russia’s 83rd Guards Air Assault Brigade is among those using the service in the Klishchiivka and Andriivka battlegrounds.

Speculations abound regarding how Russian forces gain access to Starlink terminals, with some suggesting ‘spoofing’ techniques or procurement through illicit means.

Russian pro-war channel Two Majors has notably hailed Musk as ‘Colonel Muskov,’ alleging that Starlink terminals are acquired through covert channels involving third countries.

Musk, meanwhile, has advocated for an end to US economic support for Ukraine in its conflict with Russia. SpaceX has clarified that Starlink is not active in Russia and has not been sold or marketed to the country.

While Defense One reports Russian usage of Starlink for several months, Musk maintains that Starlink has not been sold to Russia directly or indirectly.
