Mumbai: Mumbai police arrested a man believed to be a Bangladeshi citizen on Sunday in connection with the stabbing of Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan. The attack, which occurred on Thursday during a burglary attempt at Khan’s home, left the 54-year-old actor with six stab wounds but out of danger, according to doctors.
The incident has shocked India’s film industry and residents of Mumbai, sparking calls for better policing and security. Khan, one of Bollywood’s most celebrated actors, underwent surgery for injuries to his spine, neck, and hands and has since been discharged from the hospital.
“Primary evidence suggests that the accused is a Bangladeshi citizen, and after entering India illegally, he changed his name,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police Dixit Gedam at a press conference.
The suspect, who was arrested on the outskirts of Mumbai, was reportedly using the alias Vijay Das. Police believe his real name is Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad. Gedam added that the man had been working with a housekeeping agency in Mumbai for the past five to six months.
