France Reports First Case of New Mpox Clade 1b Variant

This new variant, identified as clade 1b, is connected to a global health emergency declared by the World Health Organization in August.

Paris: France has confirmed its first case of the new mpox variant, AFP reported on Monday, citing a statement from the country’s health ministry. The patient, a woman, was diagnosed in the northwestern region of Brittany, specifically at a hospital in Rennes.

The patient had not traveled to Central Africa, the origin of the new form of the virus, but had been in contact with two individuals who had returned from that region, AFP reported. Health authorities are actively investigating the source of the infection and are tracing all potential contacts to prevent further spread.

This new variant, identified as clade 1b, is connected to a global health emergency declared by the World Health Organization in August. France’s case follows reports of similar occurrences in neighboring Germany and Britain, both of which confirmed their first cases of the variant in October.
