Airbus Tests Removable Firefighting Kit for Military Transport Planes

The kit features a tank and two discharge pipes, which can be installed in the cargo hold and ramp of any A400M aircraft.

El Cubillo De Uceda, Spain: European aerospace giant Airbus is testing a removable kit in Spain that allows its A400M military transport aircraft to combat wildfires. The initiative comes as the world grapples with increasingly severe fires linked to climate change.

The trials, conducted in El Cubillo de Uceda, approximately 69 km (43 miles) from Madrid, aim to assess the kit’s effectiveness in suppressing wildfires. According to Airbus, the system is designed for indirect attacks on fires, enhancing the capabilities of firefighting crews.

Transforming A400M into Firefighting Aircraft

The kit features a tank and two discharge pipes, which can be installed in the cargo hold and ramp of any A400M aircraft. With over 100 A400M planes already operational worldwide, the kit offers a flexible solution for wildfire management.

“You can convert the A400M into an aerial firefighting aircraft quickly, installing this kit in around 2-3 hours, and then you have the capability ready,” said Sara Vargas, project manager at Airbus Defence and Space, in a statement to Reuters.

The modified A400M can deliver 20 tons of water or fire retardant, aiding efforts to control large-scale fires that are otherwise challenging to extinguish. Vargas added, “The advantage is that this aircraft can fly slow and low and is able, with its manoeuvrability, to do this operation with a very high standard of safety.”

A Timely Response to Rising Fire Threats

Airbus is actively engaging with its clients to identify potential buyers for the kit and aims to have it in operational use within a couple of years.

Scientists have highlighted the role of human activity in igniting most wildfires, while climate change exacerbates their spread through hotter, drier conditions. Heatwaves, reduced rainfall, and increased vegetation fuel due to declining rural activity are altering fire dynamics, according to Alvaro Jimenez, an official from Spain’s Environment Ministry.

As wildfires become more intense and destructive, innovations like Airbus’s firefighting kit could play a crucial role in mitigating their impact.
