Washington: Former U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, 84, has been hospitalized in Luxembourg following an injury sustained during an official trip. Pelosi’s office confirmed the news in a statement on Friday, noting she was undergoing evaluation.
“While traveling with a bipartisan Congressional delegation in Luxembourg to mark the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge, Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi sustained an injury during an official engagement and was admitted to the hospital for evaluation,” said spokesperson Ian Krager.
He added, “Speaker Emerita Pelosi is currently receiving excellent treatment from doctors and medical professionals. She continues to work.” No details were provided regarding the nature or cause of her injury.
Aging Leadership Faces Challenges
Pelosi’s injury comes on the heels of a similar incident involving Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, 82, who sustained minor injuries after a fall in the U.S. Capitol earlier this week. Both leaders have faced increasing scrutiny over the age of Congressional leadership and the need for generational transition in Washington.
McConnell, like Pelosi, chose not to pursue another term as leader following the November elections. He is set to be succeeded by Senator Jon Thune, 63, when the new Congress convenes in January.
A Storied Political Career
A towering figure in U.S. politics, Pelosi was the first woman to serve as Speaker of the House. Her tenure spanned two separate terms, from 2007 to 2011 and again from 2019 to 2023. Known for her legislative acumen, Pelosi was instrumental in passing key Democratic priorities, including President Joe Biden’s $1 trillion infrastructure bill in 2022.

Pelosi’s tenure also included high-profile clashes with former President Donald Trump, highlighted by her dramatic act of tearing up his State of the Union speech in 2020.
After stepping down as Speaker when Republicans regained control of the House in 2023, Pelosi continued to represent her San Francisco district. In November, she secured her 20th consecutive term with an overwhelming 81% of the vote.

Legacy and Leadership
Pelosi’s leadership spanned seven presidential administrations, during which she became a symbol of resilience and determination in Democratic politics. While stepping back from her leadership role, Pelosi remains an influential figure in Congress.
Her hospitalization is a reminder of the challenges faced by senior members of Congress as the debate over generational change continues.
