Motorcycle Attackers Kill 21 as Promised Security Flops

NIAMEY, Niger: In a stark reminder of the ongoing security crisis in the Sahel, armed attackers on motorcycles ambushed a civilian bus near the town of Tera, close to the border with Burkina Faso, killing at least 21 passengers.

This violent incident has been labeled by the Nigerien army as a “hateful and inhumane act,” underscoring the severity of the violence in the region. Following the attack, the situation worsened when, on the subsequent day, a soldier lost his life after a military vehicle struck an improvised explosive device during a reprisal operation.

The Tillaberi region, known for being a hotspot of insurgent activities, continues to defy the repeated assurances of safety by Niger’s military leaders. The current government, which took power through a coup and has since expelled U.S. military personnel while strengthening ties with Russia, is now facing criticism for its apparent inability to provide security.

The recent attacks highlight a grim reality: despite new alliances and proclamations of improved security, the situation on the ground remains volatile. The military’s promise of safety appears to be more rhetorical than effective, leaving many to question the effectiveness of their strategies against the backdrop of escalating violence in the region.
