NIAMEY, Niger: In a stark reminder of the ongoing security crisis in the Sahel, armed attackers on motorcycles ambushed a civilian bus near the town of Tera, close to the border with Burkina Faso, killing at least 21 passengers.
This violent incident has been labeled by the Nigerien army as a “hateful and inhumane act,” underscoring the severity of the violence in the region. Following the attack, the situation worsened when, on the subsequent day, a soldier lost his life after a military vehicle struck an improvised explosive device during a reprisal operation.

The Tillaberi region, known for being a hotspot of insurgent activities, continues to defy the repeated assurances of safety by Niger’s military leaders.
