Baghdad: Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein is set to meet his Syrian and Iranian counterparts on Friday to address the evolving situation in Syria, Iraq’s state news agency reported on Thursday.
Meeting Follows Syrian Rebels’ Rapid Advances
The scheduled meeting comes in the wake of significant developments in Syria, where rebels launched a rapid offensive last week. They seized control of the key northern city of Aleppo from Iran-backed Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and captured the city of Hama on Thursday.
Diplomatic Movements in Baghdad
On Thursday, Syrian Foreign Minister Bassam Sabbagh arrived in Baghdad ahead of the trilateral talks. According to the Iraqi News Agency (INA), the Iranian Foreign Minister is expected to join the discussions on Friday.

The meeting aims to assess the implications of the rebel advances and explore coordinated measures among the three countries to address the unfolding crisis in Syria.
Regional Responses and Mobilizations
Amid escalating tensions, some Iraqi fighters reportedly entered Syria earlier this week to support Assad’s forces, according to Iraqi and Syrian sources. Meanwhile, Iraq’s Iran-aligned Hashd al-Shaabi paramilitary coalition has mobilized along the border with Syria. The coalition stated that its deployment is purely preventative, aimed at averting any potential spillover of the conflict into Iraqi territory.
