Jasleen Kaur Wins 2024 Turner Prize for Innovative Exhibition

Kaur, born in Glasgow, will receive a cash prize of 25,000 pounds (approximately $31,657.50).

London: British artist Jasleen Kaur was named the recipient of the 2024 Turner Prize for contemporary art on Tuesday. The prestigious award was given in recognition of Kaur’s exhibition, which judges described as an exploration of everyday objects, brought to life through sound and music to “summon community and cultural inheritance.”

Established in 1984 and named after the renowned British painter J.M.W. Turner, the Turner Prize is awarded annually to an artist born or based in the UK who has presented an exceptional exhibition or body of work in the previous year.

Kaur, born in Glasgow, will receive a cash prize of 25,000 pounds (approximately $31,657.50). Her exhibition, Alter Altar, was lauded by the jury for its seamless fusion of personal, political, and spiritual elements. The jury highlighted Kaur’s ability to create “unexpected and playful combinations of materials,” using everything from family photographs to a vintage car, to bring diverse voices and perspectives together.
