China Surpasses India as Top Tourism Market for Maldives Amid Diplomatic Tensions

New York: Official figures released on Monday reveal a significant shift in the tourism landscape of the Maldives, with Chinese tourists now surpassing their Indian counterparts. As of February 4, China leads with 23,972 visitors, claiming an 11.2% market share in 2024, up from the third position in 2023. In contrast, India, which held the top spot in 2023, has slipped to fifth place with 16,536 tourists and a 7.7% market share in 2024.

This change is attributed to a diplomatic row fueled by derogatory remarks against India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi by three Maldivian ministers on social media. The controversial comments triggered a backlash on social media, leading to calls for boycotting tourism in the Maldives and exploring domestic destinations instead.

President Muizzu, who took office in November, is perceived as a pro-China leader. The diplomatic tension further intensified when he requested India to withdraw 88 military personnel by March 15. This shift in dynamics aligns with President Muizzu’s efforts to strengthen ties with China, as seen in his January meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang.

While India-friendly incumbent Ibrahim Mohamed Solih was defeated in the presidential runoff, the diplomatic tensions have impacted tourism patterns. The Maldives aims to counterbalance the shift by announcing plans to expand the tourism sector, including establishing 20 new resorts in 2024, adding 2,800 beds, and completing the development of undeveloped resorts.
