LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Millions of residents in California are grappling with perilous flooding as a powerful storm, bringing record rains and gusting winds, sweeps across the state. The US National Weather Service issued warnings of “life-threatening” flash flooding due to excessive rainfall, particularly in Southern California, where an “atmospheric river” made landfall from the Pacific Ocean.
Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency for eight counties in Southern California, including Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, and Santa Barbara. The storm’s impact is described as “dangerous and potentially life-threatening,” prompting urgent measures to address the unfolding emergency.
In the last 48 hours, the region has experienced unprecedented rainfall, with the expectation of another five to eight inches in the Los Angeles area. The National Weather Service forecast warns of “life-threatening” flash floods, urban flooding, small stream flooding, as well as the risk of debris flows and mudslides.
Downtown Los Angeles recorded one of its wettest days ever, with over four inches of rain, leading to an “extremely dangerous situation.” Northern California faced a tragic incident as a man lost his life when a massive redwood tree fell on him in his backyard in Yuba.
Wind gusts reaching up to 102 miles per hour hit San Francisco and the Bay Area, causing flight disruptions and power outages affecting more than half a million customers. The storm, part of a “Pineapple Express” phenomenon, is considered the “largest storm of the season.”
