Amman: A gunman was fatally shot, and three police officers sustained injuries during a shooting near the Israeli embassy in Amman, Jordan, according to security sources and state media reports on Sunday.
The incident unfolded in the Rabiah neighborhood, a high-security area housing the Israeli embassy. Jordan’s state news agency Petra reported that police neutralized the gunman after he opened fire on a police patrol in the area. Authorities confirmed that investigations are ongoing to determine the motive and other details surrounding the incident.
Eyewitnesses recounted hearing gunfire as police swiftly cordoned off the area. Ambulances and security personnel were seen rushing to the scene, and residents were advised to remain indoors while authorities conducted their search.
The Rabiah neighborhood, known for being a site of frequent anti-Israel demonstrations, has become a flashpoint in recent weeks amid heightened tensions over the ongoing war in Gaza. Jordan has witnessed some of the region’s largest peaceful protests, reflecting widespread anti-Israel sentiment among its citizens.

Jordan’s population includes a significant number of Palestinian-origin residents, many of whom or their families fled or were expelled during the 1948 Arab-Israeli conflict. This demographic reality underpins strong public opposition to Jordan’s peace treaty with Israel, signed in 1994, which remains deeply unpopular. Many Jordanians view normalization with Israel as a betrayal of Palestinian rights.
