Kyiv: Russian forces have executed a surprising assault on Kupiansk in the Kharkiv region, employing a daring tactic of disguising themselves in Ukrainian military uniforms to infiltrate the city’s defenses.
Russian Troops in Ukrainian Uniforms Stage Covert Infiltration
Kupiansk, a key frontline city, has become a critical point of contention in recent months. Russian troops infiltrated the northern industrial outskirts of the city, reportedly catching Ukrainian defenders off guard. According to Hotnews, the assault began with Russian armored vehicles advancing several kilometers into Ukrainian-held territory.
The attackers, camouflaged in Ukrainian uniforms, penetrated the suburbs and industrial areas. The 114th Ukrainian Territorial Defense Brigade, along with other local units, was unprepared for the unconventional tactics.
Ukrainian Drones Strike Back Against Infiltrating Troops
Ukrainian forces quickly mounted a response. Drones targeted and neutralized a significant number of the infiltrating Russian troops. However, the attack’s surprise nature initially disrupted the city’s defense efforts.
“They entered partially into the suburbs and were destroyed by our troops,” stated a military administrator in Kupiansk. Russian forces reportedly deployed heavy armored vehicles and attempted to reinforce their offensive with infantry units.

A report from Ukraine’s Center for Defense Strategies emphasized the gravity of the situation, noting that the use of Ukrainian uniforms by Russian forces allowed them to bypass initial defenses. This tactic raised alarm among Ukrainian military leaders about the potential for future infiltrations.
Rising Conflict Dynamics in Kupiansk
This bold assault reflects a broader shift in Russian military strategy around Kupiansk. While Ukrainian forces successfully repelled the attack, it highlights an increasing level of coordination and aggression from Russian troops.
Analysts suggest this escalation is politically motivated. Russian President Vladimir Putin is believed to be pressuring his military to secure additional territory before the inauguration of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, amid expectations that Trump may advocate for a ceasefire more favorable to Moscow.
Kupiansk remains a contested battleground. While Ukrainian forces have managed to hold their ground for now, the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) warns that continued Russian advances in the region could lead to significant operational challenges for Ukraine.
