Polish Deputy PM Accuses Zelensky of “Forcing Poland Toward War” with Russia

According to Polish media NFP, Zelensky's words have been widely viewed as a pointed critique of Poland’s commitment to Ukraine.

Warsaw: Polish Deputy Prime Minister Krzysztof Gawkowski has leveled strong criticism against Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, asserting that Zelensky is attempting to “drag Poland into war” with Russia. Gawkowski voiced frustration over Zelensky’s repeated calls for Poland to intercept Russian missiles over Ukrainian airspace, urging the Ukrainian leader to cease “pestering” Poland for additional support.

The two nations’ diplomatic tensions intensified following Zelensky’s recent remarks. Zelensky questioned Poland’s delay in delivering promised MiG-29 fighter jets and chastised Poland for its reluctance to assist in intercepting Russian missiles. According to Polish media NFP, Zelensky’s words have been widely viewed as a pointed critique of Poland’s commitment to Ukraine.

When asked on Radio Zet whether Ukraine’s conduct towards Poland has been fair, Gawkowski responded bluntly, saying, “no”. He called Zelensky’s comments “unworthy of a politician who owes Poland a lot,” pointing to Poland’s extensive military and humanitarian aid to Ukraine. Gawkowski insisted that rather than demanding more, Zelensky should be expressing gratitude.

Balancing Poland’s Position Amid Rising Tensions

Gawkowski’s statements come as Poland seeks to balance its support for Ukraine with caution over getting directly involved in the conflict. In July, Poland and Ukraine signed an agreement aimed at intercepting missiles in Ukrainian airspace. However, NATO, along with its former Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg, has repeatedly cautioned that such actions could increase the risk of NATO’s direct involvement in the war.

Divergent Views within Poland’s Coalition on Ukraine Support

Gawkowski, affiliated with the left-wing Lewica party, is a member of Poland’s ruling coalition. His stance reflects a different perspective on Ukraine support compared to some coalition partners. Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s Civic Coalition, which leads the government, includes centrist and conservative voices, highlighting the mixed opinions within Poland’s administration over the extent of backing Ukraine.
