At least 25 people lost their lives when a Garwal Motors Users’ bus plunged into a 200-meter-deep gorge near Kupi in Ramnagar, Uttarakhand, at the Pauri-Almora border on Monday. Authorities have launched a search and rescue operation, and injured passengers are being transported to the hospital.
The ill-fated bus was en route from Garhwal to Kumaon when the accident occurred near Marchula in Almora, according to District Magistrate Alok Kumar Pandey. Initial reports confirmed seven fatalities, but officials warn the death toll may increase, as there were approximately 40 passengers onboard at the time of the crash.

“Received very sad news of casualties of passengers in the unfortunate bus accident that took place in Marchula of Almora district. The district administration has been instructed to conduct relief and rescue operations swiftly,” the Chief Minister said on X. He further noted that local administration and SDRF teams are working rapidly to transport the injured to nearby health centers, with provisions in place to airlift severely injured passengers if needed.
