Beijing: Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrei Rudenko met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Beijing on Wednesday, according to Russia’s RIA news agency. While the specific agenda of Rudenko’s visit remains undisclosed, the timing raises interest amid rising international tensions, especially regarding Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine.
The 62-year-old Rudenko, a seasoned diplomat fluent in both English and Chinese, has been a crucial figure in strengthening Russia’s ties with North Korea. His trip comes as concerns mount within NATO and South Korea about the potential involvement of North Korean troops in support of Russia in Ukraine.
Rudenko’s role in fostering Russian-North Korean relations became increasingly prominent following Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in early 2022. He previously participated in Russia-Ukraine peace negotiations during the initial phases of the conflict, underscoring his strategic position in Russian foreign policy.

Prior to the invasion, Rudenko emphasized the importance of Russia’s historical alliances within the post-Soviet space. “Wherever these countries go, no matter how they develop, they will always be a priority, among our geopolitical priorities, regardless of the geopolitical context,” RIA quoted him as saying in December 2021, further noting, “This is part of our former common Soviet past.”
