Defectors from North Korea Seek to Support Ukraine, Counter North Koreans Fighting for Russia

To formalize their support, the defectors have submitted an official request to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, outlining their proposed contributions.

Beijing: Two hundred North Korean defectors residing in South Korea have expressed their willingness to assist Ukraine, offering their military experience to counter North Korean soldiers reportedly fighting alongside Russian forces. These defectors, with military backgrounds and years of service, hope to engage in “psychological warfare” to undermine the morale of North Korean troops fighting for Russia.

In-Depth Understanding of North Korean Military Psychology

According to the South China Morning Post (SCMP), the defectors—all former military personnel with seven to ten years of experience—believe their understanding of North Korean military culture and psychology will be invaluable on the battlefield. The defectors are preparing to employ psychological tactics to weaken the resolve of North Korean soldiers deployed on Russia’s side.

“We are all military veterans who understand the culture and mindset of North Korean forces better than anyone else,” one defector explained.

Their strategic plan includes using loudspeaker broadcasts, distributing informational leaflets, and possibly working as interpreters, all aimed at eroding the morale of their former compatriots now fighting under the Russian flag.

Formal Appeal Submitted to Ukraine

To formalize their support, the defectors have submitted an official request to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, outlining their proposed contributions. While Zelensky’s administration has not yet commented publicly, international media have taken notice, viewing this offer as a reflection of the broader alliances and complex global dynamics affecting the war. The request highlights the unique support Ukraine has received from diverse groups worldwide.

This proposal comes as Russia reportedly increases its military forces with thousands of North Korean soldiers through an alliance with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. Such alliances underscore the geopolitical shifts at play, with defectors seeing the conflict as a chance to oppose the authoritarian regime they once served.

Potential for Enhanced Psychological Warfare in the Conflict

If accepted, the defectors’ offer could deepen the psychological dimension of the war in Ukraine. Their knowledge of North Korean military operations and culture could introduce a specialized psychological strategy to Ukraine’s resistance efforts, marking a symbolic and tactical escalation.

The World Food Program and various organizations in South Korea are closely monitoring the situation, which, if realized, would add a rare and symbolic layer to the ongoing conflict.
