Karachi Faces Chaos as Heavy Rainfall Triggers Flooding, Mayor Urges Caution and Updates on Key Developments

Karachi: Pakistan’s big city of Karachi faced severe waterlogging on Saturday night as incessant rain pounded most parts, resulting in major traffic disruptions across key arteries.

Rescue 1122 issued a statement urging the public to refrain from unnecessary travel, citing difficulties faced by rescue teams in emergency responses due to severe traffic jams. The statement assured that rescue teams were dispatched and actively present in various parts of the city to assist citizens.

Fortunately, there were no reports of building collapses, but two individuals sustained minor injuries from a wall collapse near Kashmir Road. Both were promptly transferred to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for treatment.

Meteorological data from the Met Office revealed staggering rainfall figures, with PAF Faisal Base recording the highest at 75 millimeters, followed by Malir (64mm), Surjani Town (63.8mm), Keamari (55mm), and Quaidabad (52mm), among others.

Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab advised citizens to avoid unnecessary movement, assuring that teams were deployed to clear major roads. He acknowledged specific issues at Tipu Sultan Road and Nursery on Shahrae Faisal, hindering water discharge efforts.

The South deputy commissioner’s office echoed similar concerns, urging the public to avoid unnecessary travel as congestion impacted drainage efforts. Visuals shared by citizens depicted “urban flooding” at Tariq Road and Shahrae Faisal, with submerged cars highlighting the severity of the situation.

K-Electric (KE) spokesperson Imran Rana reported that 600 out of 2,100 feeders were shut down for safety reasons in the wake of the heavy rainfall.
