NVIDIA’s Jensen Huang Hails Elon Musk’s xAI Supercomputer as a ‘Superhuman’ Achievement

Huang emphasized the significance of Colossus, noting that it has become easily regarded as the fastest supercomputer on the planet operating as a single cluster.

Santa Clara, California: NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang has lauded Elon Musk’s AI venture, xAI, for its groundbreaking achievements in the realm of supercomputing. In a recent interview on the B2g Pod, Huang expressed his admiration, stating, “As far as I know, there’s only one person in the world who could do that; Elon is singular in his understanding of engineering and construction and large systems and marshalling resources; it’s just unbelievable.”

The supercomputer in focus is Colossus, constructed using a cluster of 100,000 NVIDIA GPUs. While Musk initially claimed that the entire project took only 19 days from hardware installation to training, the complete timeline spanned 122 days. Despite this discrepancy, Huang commended xAI’s engineering and software teams, describing their efforts as “extraordinary”.

Huang emphasized the significance of Colossus, asserting it has become “easily the fastest supercomputer on the planet as one cluster.” He noted that such rapid deployment is unprecedented, as traditional supercomputers typically require three years of planning and an additional year to operationalize. “A supercomputer that you would build would take normally three years to plan and then they deliver the equipment, and it takes one year to get it all working,” he added.
