Islamabad: The Shehbaz Sharif-led government in Pakistan has implemented stringent security measures in preparation for the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Islamabad, scheduled for October 15 and 16. High-profile leaders, including India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Chinese Premier Li Qiang, are set to attend the summit, prompting heightened security protocols.

Military Control in Islamabad and Rawalpindi

In light of recent terrorist attacks and ongoing political protests by supporters of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, the government has placed security operations in Islamabad and Rawalpindi under military control. Approximately 10,000 soldiers and commandos from the Pakistan Army have been deployed to ensure public safety during this crucial event. Local police and security forces are now mandated to follow orders directly from military officials.

Business and Public Restrictions

To maintain order, the government has enforced a shutdown of wedding halls, cafes, restaurants, and snooker clubs in both cities from October 12 to 16. Authorities have issued strict warnings, threatening legal consequences for non-compliance. Business owners are required to submit bail bonds to guarantee that no unauthorized individuals are residing in their establishments during this period. Additionally, public holidays have been declared in Islamabad and Rawalpindi on October 14 and 16.

Rising Tensions

Despite these security measures, Imran Khan’s Tehreek-e-Insaf party is expected to hold protests, raising concerns about potential clashes between demonstrators and military personnel. The political climate remains tense as the government seeks to balance security with civil liberties.

What is the SCO Summit?

The 23rd meeting of the heads of government of the SCO member states will take place in Islamabad on October 15 and 16. As foreign delegations begin to arrive, a 76-member delegation from Russia and seven representatives from the SCO have reached the country. Reports indicate that a four-member official delegation from India, along with a 15-member delegation from China, a four-member delegation from Kyrgyzstan, and a two-member delegation from Iran, have also arrived in Islamabad.
