TAIPEI, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) —Fire at Antai Hospital in Donggang, Pingtung Taiwan. A tragic fire at Antai Tian-sheng Memorial Hospital in Pingtung County, southern Taiwan, has resulted in the deaths of eight individuals as of 1 p.m. local time, according to reports from local media.

The Pingtung County government confirmed that the victims, which included six men and two women, were found without signs of life after being rescued from the blaze. Despite emergency resuscitation efforts, all eight were declared dead.

The local fire department received an alert at 7:41 a.m. regarding thick smoke coming from the hospital building. Su Ching-chyuan, the hospital’s honorary dean, stated that the fire was triggered by the combustion of an air compressor located in the machine room of the facility. Most of the victims were elderly patients who were hospitalized at the time of the incident.

Rescue personnel reported that the fire has since been brought under control, and investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
