Switzerland Selects Peruvian Drama ‘Reinas’ for 2025 Oscars

Reinas is set against the politically turbulent backdrop of Lima in 1992, following a father’s attempt to reconnect with his two estranged daughters.

Switzerland has chosen Reinas, a Peruvian family drama directed by Swiss-Peruvian filmmaker Klaudia Reynicke, as its official entry for the 2025 Academy Awards in the Best International Feature category.

Reinas is set against the politically turbulent backdrop of Lima in 1992, following a father’s attempt to reconnect with his two estranged daughters. Gonzalo Molina stars as Carlos, a taxi driver and struggling actor, with Abril Gjurinovic and Luana Vega portraying his daughters, Lucia and Aurora. The film explores their fragile reunion during a summer marked by personal and national crises, including the country’s hyperinflation and political instability.

The film, Reynicke’s third feature, premiered at Sundance and went on to win the Grand Prix for Best Film from the Generation Kplus international jury at the Berlin Film Festival.

Switzerland has previously garnered five nominations in the Best International Feature category, winning twice. Peru, meanwhile, has secured one nomination to date, for Claudia Llosa’s The Milk of Sorrow in 2009.

The shortlist for the 2025 Best International Feature category will be announced on December 17, with final nominations revealed on January 17. The 2025 Oscars ceremony will take place on Sunday, March 2.

As of now, several countries have announced their official entries for the Best International Feature Film category at the 2025 Oscars:

  3. Mexico has chosen Sujo, directed by Astrid Rondero and Fernanda Valadez​.
  4. Norway is submitting Armand, directed by Halfdan Ullmann Tøndel​.
  5. Palestine has selected From Ground Zero, which features stories from Gaza​
  6. Argentina is submitting La Tercera Guerra Mundial, directed by Álvaro Brechner​.

The shortlist for Best International Feature contenders will be announced on December 17, with nominations following on January 17, 2025. The 2025 Academy Awards ceremony is scheduled for March 2, 2025​.
