World Cup Winner Raphaël Varane, 31, Retires from Football Following Knee Injury

Varane confirmed that while he is retiring as a player, he will remain with Como in a non-playing capacity:

Former France and Real Madrid center-back Raphaël Varane announced his retirement from football on Wednesday, closing the chapter on a decorated career that saw him win both the World Cup and numerous club titles.

Varane, 31, signed with Serie A club Como in July 2024 but sustained a knee injury during his debut in an Italian Cup match against Sampdoria last month. The injury marked his only appearance for the club.

Reflecting on his career, Varane shared his decision on Instagram: “In my career, I have taken on many challenges, rose to occasion after occasion. Reflecting on these moments, it is with immense pride and a feeling of fulfillment that I am announcing my retirement from the game that we all love.”

World Cup and Club Success

Varane’s international career was highlighted by his key role in France’s 2018 World Cup victory in Russia. His standout performances throughout the tournament solidified his status as one of the world’s top defenders. Notably, Varane scored a crucial header in the quarterfinals against Uruguay, one of his five international goals.

At the club level, Varane was instrumental in Real Madrid’s dominance during his tenure, helping the Spanish giants secure four Champions League titles and three La Liga trophies. Known for his composure, tactical intelligence, and ability to read the game, Varane formed a formidable defensive partnership with Samuel Umtiti during the 2018 World Cup.

Club Career and National Team Legacy

After 10 successful seasons at Real Madrid, Varane joined Manchester United in 2021. His time at Old Trafford, however, was marred by injuries, limiting him to just 95 appearances over three seasons. Before his stints at Madrid and United, Varane began his career at Lens in France.

Varane retired from international duty earlier in 2023, shortly after France’s World Cup final loss to Argentina in Qatar. His 93rd and final match for Les Bleus saw him collapse in exhaustion during extra time, encapsulating his commitment to the team. A key figure in Didier Deschamps’ squad, Varane served as a leader alongside fellow veterans Hugo Lloris, Paul Pogba, and Antoine Griezmann.

Deschamps praised Varane’s qualities, stating: “Speed, vision, technique, mental strength—Raphaël had all the right qualities to achieve the magnificent career that was his. Knowing him, I know that this decision came after mature reflection.”

Looking Ahead

Varane confirmed that while he is retiring as a player, he will remain with Como in a non-playing capacity: “Just without using my boots and shin pads. Something I am looking forward to sharing more about soon.”

Como, under the management of Cesc Fabregas, recently secured its first Serie A victory in 21 years with a 3-2 win against Atalanta.
