Who Is Atishi?
Atishi, an alumna of Oxford University and a Rhodes Scholar, has emerged as a key figure within the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and is closely associated with Arvind Kejriwal and former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, under whom she served as an advisor until 2018.
Her significance in the party was evident when Kejriwal recommended her to represent him by hoisting the national flag during Delhi’s Independence Day celebration. She is the only woman minister in the Delhi Cabinet and currently oversees 14 key portfolios, including education, finance, public works, revenue, and services.
Known for her behind-the-scenes influence, Atishi gained prominence when she became the face of AAP after Kejriwal and other leaders were arrested in connection with the liquor policy case. Her leadership in media briefings and defense of the party’s stand during that time elevated her stature within the party and among the public.
Atishi’s primary task ahead will be preparing AAP for the upcoming assembly elections in 2024. As a highly regarded administrator, she has received widespread praise for her work in improving Delhi’s education system, a flagship area for the AAP government.
Atishi began her political journey with AAP in 2013 and gained attention during the Jal Satyagraha in Khandwa, Madhya Pradesh, in 2015. Her electoral debut was in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, where she was defeated by cricketer-turned-politician Gautam Gambhir in East Delhi. However, she rebounded by winning the Kalkaji seat in the 2020 Delhi Assembly polls, defeating BJP’s Dharambir Singh by over 11,000 votes.
