Russia Bolsters Su-34 Fleet to Counter Ukraine’s Advanced F-16s

This steady flow of new aircraft highlights Russia’s ability to keep its production lines active.

Moscow: Russia’s Air Force has taken delivery of a new batch of Su-34 fighter bombers, underscoring the country’s continued efforts to expand its military capabilities despite the ongoing conflict with Ukraine and significant losses on the battlefield.

Maintaining Production Lines

The United Aircraft Corporation, Russia’s state-owned aerospace giant, confirmed that the newly delivered jets are fresh off the production line, ensuring that manufacturing continues uninterrupted. While the exact number of jets in this latest batch has not been disclosed, reports indicate that two Su-34s were delivered, consistent with previous shipments.

This steady flow of new aircraft highlights Russia’s ability to keep its production lines active. Estimates suggest that the country is producing 8-10 Su-34s annually. These aircraft are specifically designed to counter advanced threats like the F-16s recently supplied to Ukraine.

Three Months of Deliveries Erased

However, this latest delivery is a small addition compared to Russia’s broader needs. The last shipment of Su-34s occurred in June 2024, with the previous delivery in April. Despite these continued efforts, the Russian Air Force has suffered considerable setbacks, losing multiple Su-34s to Ukrainian forces.

In late August 2024, a Ukrainian attack on Russia’s Marinovka airbase reportedly destroyed six Su-34s, effectively wiping out the gains from three months of deliveries.

The Su-34 is renowned for its versatility and advanced capabilities. Capable of carrying up to 8 tons of weaponry, including nuclear arms, the aircraft also features a 30mm GSh-30-1 cannon. It can reach speeds of up to 1,900 km/h at an altitude of 11 km, with an operational range of 4,000 km without mid-air refueling.
