In a devastating incident on Wednesday afternoon, a fire broke out at the Escientia Advanced Sciences Private Limited facility in the Atchutapuram SEZ, located in Rambilli mandal of Anakapalle district. The blaze, which is believed to have been triggered by a reactor blast around 2:15 PM, has resulted in the tragic death of 17 workers, with more than 30 others injured.
Rescue operations are still ongoing, with officials fearing that the death toll could rise. Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have been deployed to assist in the rescue efforts. The injured have been rushed to King George Hospital (KGH) in Visakhapatnam for treatment. Rescue teams are working tirelessly to clear the debris, as the first floor of the building collapsed during the explosion. Officials have yet to determine the exact number of workers present at the time of the incident, and many are still believed to be trapped under the rubble. Six fire tenders were dispatched immediately, with additional equipment brought in from nearby stations. The Anakapalle district Collector and Superintendent of Police are on-site, overseeing the rescue operations.
A government release later clarified that while initial reports pointed to a reactor explosion as the cause, the fire was actually ignited by a massive explosion that occurred when solvent oil was being transferred between floors. The blast reportedly took place during lunch hours. The factory, which operates in two shifts, employs 381 workers.
In response to the tragedy, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu convened a teleconference to assess the situation and ordered a high-level investigation into the incident. He assured that a comprehensive report would be prepared and expressed deep concern over the loss of lives. Naidu also confirmed plans to visit the accident site on Thursday to meet with the injured workers and their families.
The Chief Minister was informed that 17 fatalities have been confirmed so far, with several of the injured in critical condition. He criticized the pharmaceutical company’s management for its inadequate response following the accident and instructed officials to mobilize all available medical resources to save lives. Health Secretary MT Krishna Babu has been directed to rush to Anakapalle, and the use of air ambulances has been authorized if necessary. Naidu’s visit to the site will include meetings with the injured to offer government support and condolences.
