Nicosia: Cyprus has selected scientist Costas Kadis as its nominee for a position in the European Commission. The appointment was officially announced on Monday. Kadis, 57, a biologist specializing in biodiversity conservation, has served in various cabinet roles in previous administrations and currently holds the position of acting dean at a private university’s school of health sciences.
If confirmed by the European Parliament, Kadis will succeed Stella Kyriakidou, the current Cypriot commissioner who holds the health portfolio in the European Commission. Kadis’ nomination came as a surprise, as he had not been among the speculated candidates for the post.
In a written statement, Cypriot government spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis explained the rationale behind Kadis’ nomination: “The experience of Dr. Kadis with the institutional positions he has held in the service of the Republic of Cyprus, as well as his academic skills and credentials were the key elements in his selection for this important post.”

President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, informed European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen of Nicosia’s decision in a phone conversation last week, according to Letymbiotis.
Kadis brings a diverse range of experience to the role, having previously held ministerial portfolios in health, education, and agriculture under two different Cypriot administrations. His academic background and extensive experience in public service have been central to his selection for this significant role within the European Union.
