London: British Prime Minister Keir Starmer spoke with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Monday, urging him to avoid military action against Israel and emphasizing that war is not in anyone’s interest, according to a statement from the Prime Minister’s office.
The conversation, part of broader de-escalation efforts in the Middle East, came amid rising tensions following the recent killings of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Iran and Hezbollah military commander Fuad Shukr in Beirut. Both incidents have led to threats of retaliation against Israel.
Sky News reported that the phone call between Starmer and Pezeshkian lasted 30 minutes, following earlier discussions Starmer had with U.S. President Joe Biden and other European allies on the same day.
During the call, Starmer expressed his deep concern over the escalating situation in the Middle East and urged all parties involved to take steps toward de-escalation to prevent further regional conflict.

“There was a serious risk of miscalculation, and now is the time for calm and careful consideration,” Starmer stated, according to 10 Downing Street. He emphasized his commitment to an immediate ceasefire, the release of all hostages, and the increase of humanitarian aid to Gaza.
Starmer highlighted the importance of diplomatic negotiations as the primary focus moving forward. Both leaders agreed that constructive dialogue between their nations is in the best interest of both countries.
However, Starmer made it clear that further dialogue between the UK and Iran would only be possible if Iran ceases its “destabilizing actions,” including threats against individuals in Britain and its support of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
