Israeli Civilian Killed in West Bank Terror Attack; Hamas Claims Responsibility

An Israeli civilian was killed, and another was wounded in a drive-by shooting attack on a major highway in the West Bank on Sunday afternoon. The attack occurred near the Mehola Junction on Route 90, a crucial north-south route in the Jordan Valley.

Hamas claimed responsibility for the attack later that evening. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) immediately launched a large-scale manhunt, deploying numerous troops to the area and blocking roads in search of the attackers.

IDF Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi visited the site, conducting a situational assessment with defense officials. “Our mission is to catch these terrorists and prevent further attacks. We didn’t succeed here, but the clock is ticking for these perpetrators,” Halevi stated.

Initial investigations revealed that the attackers used an assault rifle, with 5.56 mm shell casings found at the scene. The two targeted vehicles were approximately 250 meters apart when they came under fire.

The deceased victim, identified as 23-year-old Yonatan Deutsch from Beit She’an, was pronounced dead at the scene. The wounded individual, 32-year-old Anas Jaramana from Muqeible, was taken to an Israeli hospital in moderate condition. Jaramana was able to report the attack to authorities, who found Deutsch in critical condition upon arrival.

The mayor of Beit She’an, Noam Juma, mourned the loss of Deutsch, describing him as a dedicated volunteer who had recently become engaged. “He was a serial volunteer, a friend, and a hero with a huge heart who left a significant mark on our city,” Juma said.

Tensions have been escalating in Israel and the West Bank since October 7, following a Hamas-led attack that left over 1,200 people dead and 251 hostages taken. In the aftermath, 26 people, including Israeli security personnel, have been killed in various attacks in Israel and the West Bank, while the IDF has conducted extensive operations, resulting in the arrest of over 4,400 wanted Palestinians, including 1,850 affiliated with Hamas.
