Cyprus Prepares to Offer Sanctuary as Middle East Tensions Escalate

Antoniou emphasized that Cyprus stands ready to support other nations in evacuating their nationals from the crisis area, offering temporary sanctuary until they can be repatriated.

Larnaca: As violence in the Middle East continues to spread, Cyprus is prepared to assist in the evacuation of Europeans and third-country nationals if the conflict deepens, officials confirmed on Thursday. The Mediterranean island, which has served as a refuge for thousands fleeing war in the volatile region over the past several decades, is once again on standby.

Amid growing concerns of a broader conflict fueled by Israel’s tensions with Iran and the Lebanese Hezbollah movement, Cyprus has activated a contingency plan known as ESTIA. “We are ready, we have activated a specific plan, ESTIA, which has been tried and tested,” said Yiannis Antoniou, Cyprus’ deputy government spokesperson.

Antoniou emphasized that Cyprus stands ready to support other nations in evacuating their nationals from the crisis area, offering temporary sanctuary until they can be repatriated. “In the event we are asked to assist other countries who may be moving their nationals from the crisis area home, we are in a position to host them for a few days until they are repatriated,” he explained.

According to Antoniou, approximately 10 countries have already inquired about the ESTIA scheme, though no formal requests have been made yet. Should a mass evacuation become necessary, the operation would primarily be conducted by air. “We have the capacity, the infrastructure,” Antoniou assured.

The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) in Larnaca, located near Cyprus’ largest airport, will serve as the central hub for these operations. The JRCC operates 24/7, coordinating, controlling, and directing search and rescue efforts. On Thursday, tents were set up within the compound, complete with cots ready to process any arrivals, according to witnesses on the ground.

Cyprus previously played a pivotal role as an evacuation hub during the 2006 conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, helping to evacuate around 30,000 people from Lebanon. “Historically, we have very good relations with all our neighbours, so we try to utilize this special role we have and want Cyprus to be a pillar of safety and stability, and act as a bridge of cooperation and peace,” Antoniou added.
