Microsoft Now Considers OpenAI as New Competitor Alongside Apple and Google

Microsoft's latest annual report now categorizes OpenAI as a competitor due to its emerging AI offerings in search and news content.

New York: Microsoft’s extensive investment in ChatGPT creator OpenAI, amounting to billions over the past 12 to 15 months, has led to a significant shift in their relationship. Recent reports suggest that Microsoft now views OpenAI as a rival in the tech landscape, alongside major competitors like Google, Apple, Amazon, and Meta.

Microsoft has leveraged its substantial $13 billion investment in OpenAI to secure exclusive access to ChatGPT and its latest features. However, OpenAI’s recent industry developments, including the launch of its own AI-powered search engine, have altered the dynamics between the two companies, transforming their previous strategic partnership into a competitive relationship.

This shift is reflected in Microsoft’s latest annual report, which now categorizes OpenAI as a competitor due to its emerging AI offerings in search and news content.

A New Competitive Landscape

CEO Satya Nadella has previously expressed admiration for OpenAI’s Sam Altman, and there was even potential for Altman to join Microsoft as its AI research chief earlier this year. However, OpenAI’s recent collaborations with rivals, including Apple—where ChatGPT 4 is now available on Macs before Windows systems—have further intensified the competition.

Despite these changes, it is anticipated that the mutual respect and admiration between Microsoft and OpenAI will continue to underpin their relationship, albeit in a more subdued manner. Microsoft has already integrated its core AI solutions into Azure and Bing with the help of ChatGPT and is expected to chart its own course for future AI advancements.
