Biden Confirms Plans for September Debate Against Trump Following Challenging First Round

Vice President Kamala Harris is preparing to debate Trump's running mate, J.D. Vance, following his official selection.

President Joe Biden has announced his intention to participate in a second debate with Donald Trump in September, following a challenging first debate that exposed vulnerabilities in his performance. Despite criticism from within his own Democratic Party regarding his debate readiness, Biden remains committed to facing Trump again on the campaign trail.

The Biden campaign’s discussion came shortly after Trump named Ohio Senator J.D. Vance as his running mate, further intensifying the race. Vice President Kamala Harris is also preparing to debate Vance, showcasing the administration’s focus on key electoral battlegrounds.

Biden’s campaign advisory board member, Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, expressed confidence in Harris’s abilities, stating, “The VP will take it to J.D. Vance. She is strong, knowledgeable, and won’t back down.”

Months ago, the Biden-Harris campaign accepted an invitation from CBS News for Harris to debate Trump’s eventual running mate on July 23 or August 13, but Trump’s campaign did not commit to the dates. With the Republican ticket now finalized, Biden’s campaign has reiterated the challenge, urging Trump’s campaign to respond.

“Biden’s campaign spokesman T.J. Ducklo emphasized that the vice president is fully prepared to take him on.”

During the call, the Biden campaign framed Vance as a threat to women’s reproductive rights and a close ally of billionaires. Biden campaign chair Jen O’Malley Dillon charged that “Trump and Vance have an agenda focused on themselves and their wealthy donor friends, while President Biden and Vice President Harris are fighting for the American people.”
