In a heartfelt address, President Joe Biden emphasized the urgent need to lower the temperature in American politics. “I want to speak to you tonight about the need for us to lower the temperature in our politics. Remember, while we may disagree, we are not enemies. We must stand together,” he stated.
Biden’s remarks came in response to the recent shooting at former President Donald Trump’s rally in Pennsylvania, which prompted a call for reflection among all Americans. He expressed relief that Trump was not seriously injured, noting, “I spoke with him last night, and I’m grateful he’s doing well. Jill and I keep him and his family in our prayers.” Biden also extended condolences to the family of the victim who lost their life during the incident.

Violence Is Not the Solution
Biden condemned the violence, stating, “A former president was shot, an American citizen killed, while simply exercising his freedom to support the candidate of his choosing. Violence has never been the answer. There is no place in America for this kind of violence, or for any violence, ever.”
He emphasized that politics should not be a battlefield: “Disagreement is inevitable in American democracy. It’s part of human nature, but politics must never be a literal battlefield and, God forbid, a killing field.” Biden reiterated that politics should serve as a platform for peaceful debate, justice, and adherence to the values enshrined in the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.
A Call for Decency and Grace
Biden urged the nation to move away from extremism and heated rhetoric, advocating for an America characterized by decency and grace. “The political rhetoric in this country has gotten very heated. It’s time to cool it down.”
Looking Ahead to the Republican National Convention
With the Republican National Convention set to begin tomorrow, Biden anticipates criticism of his record and the presentation of alternative visions for the country. He affirmed his commitment to democracy, stating, “I’ll continue to speak out strongly for our democracy. I’ll stand up for our Constitution and the rule of law. I’ll call for action at the ballot box.”
