An intense earthquake with a magnitude of 7.2 struck near Atiquipa, Peru, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The epicenter was located 8km west of Atiquipa, with a depth of 28km. Initially reported as 8.8 kilometers from the district, the quake’s magnitude was later adjusted.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, initially dismissing any threats, subsequently issued alerts cautioning of possible tsunami waves up to three meters along certain coastlines.

Residents near the epicenter experienced strong tremors, while the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center retracted an earlier statement indicating no danger, now warning of “hazardous tsunami waves” potentially reaching heights of 1 to 3 meters above normal tide levels.
